Educational Program
Chess has a wide-ranging effect on a student’s learning capacity. Chess teaches skills that will benefit the student throughout their school years and on into adult life. Who should learn chess? Chess lessons are usually targeted at a particular year-level. We have found that students in Grades 3 and 4 are at the perfect age to start developing the skills chess teaches. However, we do run educational programs for children from 4 years old right through to middle-secondary years. What are the benefits? Chess, as an ongoing component of the curriculum, is truly an integrated activity covering all key learning areas and leading to improved performance in all fields of endeavour! If educators want the best for children, then the teaching of chess has to be a serious consideration since it will be a teaching in independent thinking and judgment; our children will benefit by way of increased concentration, creativity and problem solving ability. As well as adopting chess as part of the general curriculum it can be an elective, enrichment activity to be included in a differentiated program for mentally gifted students. Enrichment chess programs can provide an interesting, alternative form of intellectual stimulus for gifted children.
