Chess Kids works with over 645 schools around Australia each year, including: Wesley College, St Catherine’s School, St Andrew’s Primary, Maranatha Christian College, Flemington Primary, MacRobertson Girls’ High, Warrnambool College, Oakleigh Greek Orthodox College, Glendal Primary, Heany Park Primary, Glamorgan (Geelong Grammar), Brighton Grammar and Camelot Rise Primary. We provide exciting chess programs for students of all abilities. Ranging from beginner and introductory workshops, through to interschool team preparation and even National level coaching. Or, we can tailor a program to suit your individual needs. Programs Offered We provide 3 main programs to schools:
Each program involves both theory and the application of that theory in practical situations. In order that the coach is able to provide individual assistance during the day we usually recommend between 14-20 student in a recreational setting. One of the most exciting parts of any incursion would be the chess exhibition. The coach would challenge up to 30 players at once and put prizes up for grabs for anyone who can win a game! We also bring a giant chess set for use during the day. The incursion would then wind up with a quick chess tournament, again with prizes for the winners. Chess Clubs Chess Kids also supports many regular chess clubs, which often evolve from the interest created by a chess incursion or chess exhibition. The format of a chess club usually involves a 15-minute lesson at the start of each lesson. Children are then encouraged to play games in a tournament setting as well as to play social chess variants such as transfer team chess (doubles). The emphasis is for the children to enjoy themselves and consequently continue their involvement in chess. Support and encouragement for children wishing to participate at tournaments outside of school and at Interschool competitions is always provided. Educational Lessons It is accepted that chess enhances students’ cognitive abilities, leading to improved performance in all subjects in the curriculum. Chess lessons can be targeted at a particular year-level or block. At Wesley College, the prep school (years 1 to 3) are given weekly chess lessons during school time as part of their curriculum. This has a two-fold benefit for the school. Firstly, chess is great learning tool that enables children to develop their visual-spatial skills, concentration and lateral thinking in an enjoyable environment; and secondly this compulsory introduction to chess often sparks further interest that provides the school club with a continual stream of interested and skilled players.
